Chail’s name is frequently mentioned when discussing weekend getaways from cities like Chandigarh and Delhi. It is ideal for a quick trip to the Himalayas due to its simplicity of access and closeness to the plains.

However, it is also not too far from Shimla, with a good motorable road connecting it to the capital city. This includes Chail in a sightseeing schedule that includes Shimla and the surrounding areas. Surrounded by a dense forest and enjoying year-round pleasant weather, the village is perched on the brink of the Chail wildlife sanctuary. It becomes a winter wonderland when it gets covered in snow during the colder months. History of Chail

Chail boasts a rich and fascinating past as well. Due to a political disagreement, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and Lord Kitchener of the East India Company got into a fight back in 1891. Lord Kitchener was so enraged by this that he prevented the Maharaja from entering Shimla, which at the time was the summer capital of the English ruling class.

Angered by this action, the Maharaja promised to construct his own summer capital, which is how Chail came to be. This is where the Royal Palace was first constructed, and the village gradually expanded around it.

It continued to be the Patiala Kings’ summer capital for a very long period. However, the Maharaja of Patiala gave the Government of India and Chail Military School the majority of his buildings after the country joined the Indian Union. But this royal residence of his was converted—and is still—into a historic hotel.

According to a different account, the Maharaja of Patiala did, in fact, elope with Lord Kitchener’s daughter. This is also how the Shimla scandal point came to be known.

4 Sadhupul

Between Chail and Solan in Himachal Pradesh stands the small town of Sadhupul. The river restaurants and campsites are its most well-known features. Sadhupul is the name of the location where a small bridge across the “Ashwini” river was built.

When the locals arrived with an alternative concept that is what made this place famous. On the riverbanks, they erected dhabas and restaurants, with the tables situated directly in the center of the water, as seen in the image below. This brings a lot of tourists to Sadhupul every day, along with families out for a picnic.

5 Chail Sanctuary

Originally the Maharaja of Patiala’s hunting ground, the 110 km2 sanctuary was declared a national monument on March 21, 1976. One of the nation’s lesser-known but best-kept wildlife sanctuaries is Chail Wildlife Sanctuary.

It is home to a diverse array of flora, fauna, and wildlife, such as black bears, leopards, deer, wild boar, and sambhar. There are numerous “Machan”-style sighting posts erected throughout the Chail sanctuary.

6 Stone Kumbh

This hill has been skillfully transformed into a magnificent stone temple dedicated to Lord Shiva by the incredible work of a single man. Over the course of the last 38 years, 64-year-old Mr. Satya Bhushan ji built the temple all by himself, piece by piece. Bhushan ji claims that he had begun construction on the building in 1980 on his ancestral land after having a dream in which he saw a Shiva temple. The shrine is also known as “Temple in my dream” because of the words that are visible atop it. They are composed of twisted metal wires. A must-see location approximately 4 km from Chail requires an 800-meter hike on foot. It is worthwhile to watch once.

Eating options

In actuality, there isn’t a single dish that can be considered a specialty of Chail or this area. However, the restaurants here serve the majority of north Indian cuisine.

You could choose to dine at the hotel where you were staying, or you could go out to eat. Alternatively, you can simply stroll to the market and dine at any of the eateries or dhabas.

I will advise travelers on a tight budget to eat at the market. You won’t spend much on the food here.

In Chail, Soni Ka Dhaba is a very famous this place’s simplicity is its USP. The greatest dhaba cuisine prepared at home! Menu is small, but the food is very fresh and the service is very friendly.
